Wenger early retirement?

Wenger is now the longest serving manager in the Gunners' illustrious history, but he shows few signs of ending his 13-year reign.
Many feel even when the Frenchman steps down from his managerial role, he will remain with the club in some capacity.
And Wenger feels he will hand the baton onto somebody who knows the club well, and he has named five potential successors in the shape of Thierry Henry, Steve Bould, Tony Adams, Nigel Winterburn and Lee Dixon.
Henry admitted on Friday that he would love to return to North London in the future, and Wenger said: "I can see that happening.
"I believe at some stage the legacy here has to go to some people who have had a big influence at this club.
"I will have to stop one day and maybe it will be me working with them.
"Thierry loves the game. Does he love to suffer? That's what he has to show as a manager.
"But it is not just him. I believe that Bould, Adams, Winterburn and Dixon can all be managers. Do they want to do it?
"First of all it has to be a choice of life. Being a manager is a sacrifice of the rest of your life. Not everybody is ready for that.

Can Barcelona keep it up?

A very comfortable win for Barça away to Racing Santander. In a 90-minute display of footballing talent, goals from Ibrahimovic, Messi (2) and Piqué made it four out of four in the league.

Barça produced an intimidating performance here in the Sardinero. From start to finish they dominated the match and played the kind of football their manager has been asking for.

It took just six minutes – from 20th to 26th - to put the three points beyond doubt. Ibra, Messi and Piqué put Racing to the sword. Barça stayed in charge during the second half and Messi added another. Serrano scored a consolation goal for Racing to make the final score 1-4.

Barça attack

Speaking after the win against Atlètic Madrid, Pep Guardiola asked his players for more verticality and tonight they gave him just that. The opening minutes witnessed a flood of Barça attacks and shots, though none of them on target. In fact the first effort on target produced the first goal in the 20th minute. A Messi cross found Ibrahimovic in the six-yard box and the Swedish striker headed into the top left-hand corner of the net.

Just before the goal, Ibra had hit the post. The crowd barely had time to catch their breath when Messi made it 0-2 after a pass from Xavi (min 23). A great goal but the best was still to come. In the 26th minute, Ibrahimovic evaded the attentions of five defenders to back heel to Piqué for the Catalan defender to right foot past Toño.

The local fans could only watch in silence as Barça ran rings round the Racing players thanks to an 80% or more of possession.

Messi outstanding

However, the second half started shakily for Barça. Ibrahimovic turned his right ankle and had to be replaced by Pedro and Henry moved to centre forward. Meanwhile, Racing were more effective in holding the Barça pressure but they finally buckled again in the 63rd minute. Messi received the all on the right wing, darted to the centre and left-footed the ball into the net from outside the box. The crowd gave him a standing ovation.

Four out of four

It seemed that it was all over for Racing, but Serrano took a leaf out of Messi’s book and pulled one back for the home side with a magnificent goal. Barça kept up the pressure right to the end and had chances to increase their lead. An all-round performance that has given the team a maximum four wins out of four.

Venger in desperate bgrings back Senderos??

rsenal defender Philippe Senderos has his best years still to come, according to manager Arsene Wenger.

The Swiss centre-back spent last season on loan at AC Milan and looked to be heading to Everton after they sold Joleon Lescott to Manchester City.

However, a move to Goodison Park before the transfer deadline never materialised, and Senderos is set to make his first Arsenal appearance since May 2008 against West Bromwich Albion in the Carling Cup on Tuesday night.

Wenger said: "I don't believe he is starting his career again because we know how good he is, but it is a new start, let's say.

"He is still very young for a centre-back, he's 24-years-old and he has the future in front of him. The best 10 years are now coming for him."

With Johan Djourou sidelined for the best part of the season because of a serious knee problem, the 24-year-old could soon find himself back in Wenger's first-team squad on a regular basis.

"In this job you have always to be ready and the day you get the chance you can do well," Wenger added.

"If you are not ready, everybody will say he is not good enough for the level, to play for Arsenal Football Club. Now Philippe is back with us, so we will just give him a chance."

Senderos will, along with veteran defender Mikael Silvestre, who has yet to make an appearance this season, provide experience at heart of defence. Full-back Kieran Gibbs, midfielders Fran Merida, Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere are in line feature as they all stake a claim for a regular first-team place, as will pacy forward Sanchez Watt.

Wenger also indicated 19-year-old Poland keeper Wojciech Szczesny was set to make his first-team debut, given Vito Mannone has been standing in for Manuel Almunia, who was out with a virus, and Lukasz Fabianski is still recovering from a knee injury.

Wales midfielder Ramsey, 18, has already made six appearances from the bench this season, scoring in the 4-1 Barclays Premier League win over Portsmouth as well as playing in Europe.

Wenger has been impressed with Ramsey's progress since his £5m move from Cardiff during the summer of 2008, saying: "I believe he has improved a lot.

Hello sport fans,

Have you watched the ending of this weekend premier league? Have you seen the battle of Manchester?? Have yuo heard what happened there? Do you know the result? Do you know the final knight??
...well ... here it is..

Michael Owen stole the show in a derby for the ages as Manchester United beat Manchester City 4-3.

In the fifth minute of stoppage-time, the substitute strode onto Ryan Giggs' precise pass, looked up and calmly found the bottom right corner.

United led three times but on each occasion were pegged back thanks to their own defensive mistakes.

Carlos Tevez started the match against his former club. His hard work was one of the reasons that made him such a hero among the Old Trafford faithful and why the City fans were so quick to acknowledge talent beyond the obvious humour of signing a player Sir Alex Ferguson was urged time and again last season to sign up.

That knowledge left Ben Foster with no excuse for the poor error of judgement that gifted City their equaliser.

Foster clearly felt the ball would eventually run into the area.

Eventually, Foster realised more urgent action was required as Tevez stormed in, just as he should have expected.

Any chance of redemption disappeared as Tevez nicked the ball away from Foster's grasp as he tried to reach the safety of his area, and slipped a pass to Gareth Barry which the England midfielder gleefully swept home.

The mistake was made worse by the knowledge Foster had already received one warning, when he got his wires crossed with Nemanja Vidic and allowed Tevez to half-block a long punt downfield.

An errant Wayne Rooney backheel might not have been of the same magnitude but its consequences were almost equally dire for United.

Kolo Toure strode onto the loose ball and fed Tevez for the opportunity to score. The Argentine thought his shot was going in. To his frustration - it bounced to safety off the post.

But it was United who made a bright start, with Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov looking particularly threatening, when Shaun Wright-Phillips let Patrice Evra run free at a quickly-taken Ryan Giggs throw-in.

Evra fed Rooney, who had the strength to wriggle past Toure and Nigel de Jong before prodding home from close range.

At that point, the noise was deafening. If anything, the volume had gone even further up the scale at the end of an awesome first seven minutes of the second half as United got their noses in front, only to be pegged back once more.

Fletcher did the damage for Ferguson's team, rising above Barry to power home a Giggs' curling cross.

Yet, just as the hosts looked set to take control, with Park Ji-sung and Giggs going close, Craig Bellamy thundered home an equaliser.

Bellamy had been buzzing around in his inimitable manner, but there was no doubting the stamp of class on his 20-yard strike as he collected Tevez's short pass, cut inside John O'Shea and drilled into the top right corner. This time Foster was blameless.

But there was so much drama still to come.

Fletcher thought he had won it as he powered home a second header, again from a Giggs cross, 10 minutes from time.

Yet the suicidal tendencies in United ranks had not gone away.

Rio Ferdinand attempted an idle chip a minute from time, but found Barry instead. Barry released Bellamy, who ran 60 yards before tucking past Foster.

It seemed City had come through their biggest test yet only for Owen to strike with seconds remaining.

Arsena - Wigan

The Gunners' 4-2 defeat to Manchester City last Saturday has dominated the headlines of late, with the full repercussions of that fixture still to be determined.

While the actions of Emmanuel Adebayor may have overshadowed the result at Eastlands, Arsene Wenger's side will have left the North West disappointed to have nothing to show for their efforts.

Having also displayed commendable battling qualities to recover from two goals down to snatch a 3-2 victory against Standard Liege in the UEFA Champions League in midweek, they will enter their latest fixture in buoyant mood.

Arsenal's past record against Wigan also suggests they will have reason to celebrate on Saturday evening.

The Gunners have won all six of their previous contests with the Latics on home soil, while they have lost just one of 11 meetings in all competitions.

On a more positive note for the visitors Wenger's side have looked uncharacteristically shaky at the back of late, with only four sides having leaked more goals than their eight in the Premier League this season.

Wigan have, however, fared woefully against the 'Big Four' in the past, with no victories taken from 33 games to date.

The men from the DW Stadium have also lost nine of their last 13 top-flight fixtures, suggesting they struggle for consistency.

Arsenal fights back!!

Unstable game by Arsenal but a good strong comeback at the second half.... Go Gunners...

Stunning start
Standard's supporters greeted their start to life in Europe's premier club competition with a wild crescendo of noise, and their heroes more than responded in kind, stunning Arsenal with a goal inside two minutes. Manuel Almunia's chest infection combined with Łukasz Fabiański's pre-season injury meant Arsène Wenger was obliged to hand third-choice goalkeeper Vito Mannone the gloves and, making his own debut at this level, the Italian was beaten at his near post by a low Mangala effort from the edge of the area after Eduardo had failed to clear a corner.

Jovanović strike
Mannone's whirlwind introduction to the competition was not over yet either, as just three minutes later he was again picking the ball out of his net. This time William Gallas brought down Jovanović and the Serbian winger picked himself up to rifle in the resultant penalty. Despite their European pedigree, Arsenal were the side more resembling naïve newcomers and, when they were not losing possession unnecessarily, their attempts to rally ran aground against some disciplined and energetic football from the hosts.

Bendtner goal
With Les Rouches increasingly content to play on the break, however, the visitors were at least able to enjoy the greater possession, and they eventually made telling use with their first genuine chance on the stroke of half-time, Bendtner sweeping a shot through goalkeeper Sinan Bolat's legs and inside the far post after running on to Abou Diaby's intelligent pass. Any suggestion that László Bölöni's troops would now crumble was quickly dismissed seconds after the restart, though, Gaël Clichy doing well to block as Dieudonné Mbokani pulled the trigger in front of goal.

Late goals
As time ebbed away, Standard nonetheless began to let Arsenal approach almost at their leisure again, a strategy that seemed destined to bear fruit as long-range shots from substitute Aaron Ramsey and captain Cesc Fàbregas found Bolat perfectly able to cope. Just as it seemed the visitors would leave empty-handed, however, Vermaelen bundled the ball over the line from point-blank range after a scramble in the area following a Fàbregas free-kick. Arsenal's winner was no prettier, Eduardo registering at close distance from a corner, but the result was all that mattered as they opened Group H with a win.

Jaroslav Plašil struck 15 minutes from time to seal a hard-earned point for FC Girondins de Bordeaux in Turin as Juventus struggled to find their flow in driving rain.

Late chance
Vincenzo Iaquinta had given the stuttering hosts a lead they scarcely deserved just after the hour but Juve, for whom Gianluigi Buffon made a string of wonderful saves, were unable to hold on. Plašil fired in from point-blank range to earn the visitors a Group A point, and Juve's disappointment was exacerbated when Claudio Marchisio spurned a glorious chance to make it 2-1 in the dying seconds.

Fernando chance
The hosts had been on the back foot from the off with Fernando, the deep-lying midfielder, eager to make an impression. He almost made a real one inside three minutes, picking up a loose ball, jinking inside three Juve defenders and firing a powerful angled shot that needed a sharp stop from Buffon. There was a real hunger in Bordeaux's play, typified as one full-back, Benoît Trémoulinas, had a shot blocked while Plašil on the other flank was causing problems with his industrious running.

Giovinco influence
The Bianconeri were fitful and could only boast a snap shot from Fabio Grosso, which sailed over, and a toe-poked half chance by Iaquinta as noteworthy attempts inside the first 20 minutes. Sebastian Giovinco, in for the injured Diego, gradually found space to exert some influence, however, and his clever footwork gave Amauri a sight at goal which Cédric Carrasso saved. The 22-year-old then tested the former Toulouse FC goalkeeper himself with a thunderous shot on the half-hour.

Buffon heroics
But La Vecchia Signora were struggling to find their rhythm as the pitch deteriorated under sodden skies. Mistakes crept back into their play and as they retreated Bordeaux twice threatened from corners, Alou Diarra shooting wide and then heading over. The French side continued to turn the screw after the break and were denied by more Buffon heroics as he repelled Yoann Gourcuff's shot after the midfielder had burst into the area. Fabio Cannavaro and Nicola Legrottaglie were both called upon to make last-ditch tackles as Juve threatened to crack.

Iaquinta breakthrough
A pause as Carrasso went off injured allowed Ciro Ferrara's men to take stock, and a subsequent spell of sustained pressure resulted in Cannavaro threading a perfectly-weighted pass into the path of Iaquinta, who rifled low past Carrasso's replacement Ulrich Ramé. Juventus were transformed, and Felipe Melo almost doubled their lead soon after as Ramé tipped wide. The veteran also reacted well to Amauri's glancing header just after Buffon denied Fernando with another show-stopping save.

Bordeaux leveller
The Italy No1 could do nothing about the equaliser, though, as Plašil stole in at the far post to tap in after Fernando had flicked Gourcuff's free-kick into his path. Buffon and his team-mates could only look on in dismay when, as they laid siege to the Bordeaux goal in the closing stages, Marchisio sent a fierce effort crashing against the bar.

The UEFA Appeals Body today accepted the appeal lodged by Arsenal FC against the two-match suspension handed to striker Eduardo.'Not established'

Following examination of all the evidence, notably the declarations of both the referee and the referees' assessor, as well as the various video footage, it was not established to the panel's satisfaction that the referee had been deceived in taking his decision on the penalty.Decision annulled

Therefore, the decision of the UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body of 1 September, in which the player was suspended for two UEFA club competition matches, is annulled.

Jose confident on Barca clash

Inter Milan manager Jose Mourinho believes his troops are capable of toppling European champions Barcelona on Wednesday. The teams meet in the opening match of the group stage of this season's UEFA Champions League at Giuseppe Meazza.

Both teams go into the game with good domestic form and Mourinho sees no reason why Inter cannot see off Josep Guardiola's all-conquering side.Mourinho believes his team is more progressive and that, if anything, Barca have become a little stagnant due to little transfer activity.

Manchester City 4 Arsenal 2??

Emmanuel Adebayor scored the decisive third goal in a pulsating encounter from which Manchester City emerged with their 100 per cent record intact.

Two weeks after dominating at Old Trafford, yet finishing on the losing side against Manchester United, Arsene Wenger experienced similar emotions on the blue half of the city after a staggering contest where for long periods, they appeared the most likely winner.

When Shaun Wright-Phillips sent over a vicious cross, ex-Gunner Adebayor had no intention other than to find the net, which he duly did, sending a capacity crowd into ecstasy.

It meant City have now won four matches, the Togo striker scoring in the lot.

It was the visitors who started better and William Gallas should have put them ahead with a far post header. Instead, the Frenchman sent it fizzing over, providing City with an escape the fickle finger of fate ensured they took full advantage of.

The Gunners midfielder has been troubled by the problem for a while, and was forced to sit out Russia’s World Cup qualifier against Liechtenstein on Saturday as a result.

He did, however, play the full 90 minutes for his country against Wales on Wednesday, helping Guus Hiddink’s side to a 3-1 victory in Cardiff.

They face a tough match against unbeaten City at Eastlands on Saturday, before starting their Champions League group campaign in Liege on Wednesday and a home encounter against Wigan Athletic the following weekend.

"He will be out for Saturday, for Wednesday and certainly as well for Wigan," Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger confirmed on Thursday.

Portugal now face the task of having to win their two remaining games, at home to Hungary and Malta, while also hoping for Sweden to drop points.

This was Faroe Islands first win in a FIFA World Cup qualifying match for eight years and only their 17th overall in 126 official matches. The islanders last tasted victory on 1 September 2001 when they beat Luxembourg 1-0. Since then they have lost 17 times and drawn only twice.

Armenia recorded their first qualifying win with an impressive performance against a Belgium side still reeling from last weekend's 5-0 rout at the hands of Spain.

Football:Norway - Macedonia 2-1

In the first half the Norwegian team put on one of their best performances for a long time in front of the home crowd, and Thorstein Helstad gave Norway the lead after only two minutes.

John Arne Riise increased the lead to 2-0 in the 25th minute on a perfect free-kick, his third such performance in a row in an international match for Norway.

However, in the second half Norway seemed to lose som of their exuberance, and after several Macedonian raids into Norwegian territory Bohan Grncarov finally succeeded and scored 10 minutes before the end.

However, Norway rode off the storm and could walk off with the end result 2-1.
